Being able to drive someone else’s car on your fully comprehensive insurance is not always included. If you are intending to drive another car it is important that you check your car insurance certificate to see what cover you have in place.
Why Do People Think They Can Drive Other Cars With Fully Comp Insurance?
There’s a reason why many people believe you can drive someone else’s car on fully comprehensive insurance. Many comprehensive insurance policies used to include a certain level of cover for driving other cars (DOC). However, this sort of cover is a lot less common than it used to be.
It certainly doesn’t come as standard, so don’t assume that your insurance policy covers you to drive someone else’s car.
How To Check If I Can Drive Someone Else’s Car on My Fully Comp Insurance
Check your car insurance certificate of insurance or your schedule as this will tell you the sections of the policy wording that apply to you. Your policy wording will explain the scope of cover, terms, conditions and exclusions that apply. If your policy includes cover for driving other cars, your policy wording will specify what level of cover you have. For example, a comprehensive policy may only give you third party only cover when you’re driving someone else’s car.
If you are still unsure, contact your insurer. They will be able to advise you on exactly what cover you have in place. If your policy doesn’t cover you for driving other cars they may be able to advise you on possible solutions. If you are caught driving without insurance you could get a fixed penalty and 6 penalty points on your licence. Fines could be greater if the case goes to court.
How Can I Get Insurance To Drive Someone Else’s Car?
If you want to drive someone else’s car, and your comprehensive car insurance doesn’t cover you, then you have two options:
- Become a named driver on the other person’s policy. This way you’ll get the same level of cover as they have on their policy.
- Get temporary car insurance. A temporary car insurance policy can give you comprehensive cover to drive someone else’s car for short periods of time.
If you have an Insure 2 Drive car insurance policy and you would like to add a named driver you can now do this in your secure customer account. To log in or register for your account click here.
